COMM2591 - HMsEx Week 3 Lecture Research :: Week 3

Major project, journal this week:

What is it?
Research study at Bundoora campus investigating vigilance entrainment through auditory cues within the broader context of awareness/drowsiness in drivers.

 How does it work?
Exploring the potential for Binaural Beats, Isochronic tones and other modalities for brainwave entrainment through auditory cues.

 Why does it work?
[Summarise current research, psychology, biology, neuroscience]

Adapted from Randy J. Larsen and Edward Diener, “Promises Problems with the Circumflex Model of Emotion,” Review of Personality and Social Psychology 13 (1992): 31.

Valence, as used in psychology, especially in discussing emotions, means the intrinsic attractiveness (positive valence) or aversiveness (negative valence) of an event, object, or situation. However, the term is also used to characterise and categorise specific emotions.

Mood
: State of mood that is experiences at a particular time
Objectless affective states

Emotion: A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one’s circumstances or relationship with others

Feeling: Emotions with cognitive overlay

Entrainment: "Appetitive vs Aversive"

Senses to exploit:
Hearing
Vision
Smell
Touch
Proprioception (muscle contraction) <- this may be useful in our research.
Balance

Scents and Sensibility

From Details Magazine, July 1992, by Brian Eno

Draws parallels between the sensorial power and immediacy of scent to the immeasurable elements of sound through a musicological framework,

"Rock music, I kept saying, was a music of timbre and texture, of the physical experience of sound, in a way that no other music had ever been or could have ever been. It dealt with a potentially infinite sonic pallette, a palette whose gradations and combinations would never adequately be described, and where the attempt at description must always lag behind the infinites of permutation."
